How to sedate an overactive dog?
I own a boston terrier, and I love the little guy to death. However, hes hyperactive when I get home from work at night about 11 and the barking is non-stop. I play with him as much as I can before bed to wear him out, but he’s usually awake till atleast 4am. My neighbors have complained about the barking and I feel terrible. I dont live in the greatest part of town so walking him/playing with him outside at night isnt really a safe option for us. I’ve known people to give dogs a half tablet of Benadryl, but I dont know if this is the safest route.
Please be kind with your suggestions. Yes, I know I own a terrier. No, I do not want to drug my dog. I’m just looking for answers!!!
i feel your pain, i had to pet sit a friend’s terror, i mean terrier for a week. Her vet told her that for his weight she could give him 1 cc of children’s benadryl to chill him out. I didn’t want to do it so i called her vet for other suggestions and he said melatonin would be safe alternative (and my old foster pom took it for his thunder anxiety). it worked pretty well, but so did walking him on the treadmill for like 15 min before bed. Good luck

The answer is – either hire a sitter to come in and walk him when you aren’t home, or give him to someone in a better position to give him the exercise he needs.
Drugging him is unfair. He’s been asleep all day. When you come home HIS DAY IS JUST STARTING. So, it’s sort of like you getting up for work, drinking a cup of coffee – then going back to bed. Not possible! You are ready for the mental and physical challenges of the day. Going to bed is the last thing you want to do.
Get it?
Drugging him into submission is not appropriate in this case.
The barking is caused by stress, boredom and lack of exercise. He’s barking because you aren’t meeting his needs.

It can be hard to sedate dogs, I don’t like the idea. It’s never a good idea to give a dog human medication unless advised to do so by a qualified vet.
It sounds like he is just lonely and bored –
You could try giving him distractions during the day, such as new toys, those balls with food hidden in them, or if you have daylight time before work, take him on a long walk then – spend as much time as possible with him before you leave for work
You could also hire a pet sitter, or look into a doggy day care so he can be with someone and tire himself out until you get home from work.
It’s also hard to train a dog that has been sedated, they are out of it and don’t really retain anything you have taught them.
If it doesn’t help I suggest talking to your vet about it, they may have some more ideas apart from sedadtion -a lot of vets don’t like to give dogs sedatives unless its for anxiety issues that are harming the dog mentally/physically.

I have found a herbal medicine called: RESCUEPETICS. by Naturapetics.
It works well, I had to find help when introducing my son’s 2 little (indoor only) cats I bought home to my farmhouse, where I have a 4 yo Silky Terrier, knowing they just wouldn’t get on. The long 9 hr trip home in the car from Sydney I gave it to them which helped immensely and was told to give it to the little dog to calm her for the introduction of NEW long term visitors. It is helping so far. hope it helps. AND IT’S NATURAL. Check out the website x
